So a little about me...
Originally I am from the south coast of the UK (just outside of Brighton to be exact) but now I live in Southport in the North West. I made the 250 mile journey for university in 2012, eight years later I'm still here! I studied a Fashion Promotion degree, and in that time I entered the world of marketing.
After a brief period of working in London, I soon realised it wasn't quite right for me. After moving back up north, I held a various marketing positions, but started to show symptoms of depression and eventually quit my job due to sever anxiety. I would go days without leaving the house so it made looking for a job pretty difficult. It was at this point that I started drawing. And MLAB was born!
What started as an outlet for my anxiety has turned into a business, selling my wares to over 22 countries around the world!
I was lucky enough to be interviewed last year by Society1, read the full interview here!
This is the first image I created back in 2017! He will always have a special place in my heart, and proudly hangs on the wall in my bedroom to remind me how far I have come!
To start with my style was quite different to what it is now. I used larger shapes and bold colours. I used to also only draw the animals head and neck.
Over time and after I purchased my Wacom tablet (it changed my life) the portraits became alot more animated and life like. I also learnt how to draw chests and bandanas and bow ties!
And here we are now! I'm proud of how my drawing style has developed over time, and no doubt it'll change the longer I'm in business.
Bandit & Baron
If you follow MLAB on Instagram, no doubt you will have seen these two little rascals! Bandit and Baron are sisters, born in 2015. Looking at them you wouldn't be able to tell they are related purely down to the size difference! They fight like cat and dog, but when it comes to bed time they cuddle up together, give each other a wash and fall asleep.
When I started MLAB, I knew I wanted their names in the business name. But after trying out many combinations, nothing stuck with me. Then one day, Make Like A Bandit happened! Don't ask me why or how, but it felt right and here we are years later!
