Find out a little more about me...

Earlier this year, I started working from a co-working space in the heart of Preston city centre. Society1 is a space like no other, it's full of friendly faces and THE best coffee. Mix this with the really cool interior and I was instantly sold!

Cat, one of the founders asked if she could interview me for a 'Members Focus' in July. Initially a little nervous, but I think I secretly enjoyed it!

We caught up with our coworker Madeleine about her and her business Make Like a Bandit. Madeleine is a Freelance illustrator and has been working at Society1 for a few months now. She creates unique pet portraits, prints and stationary by hand. Each one is bespoke and drawn just for you.

Here's what we found out when we delved a bit deeper into the world of Madeleine.....

Society1: When did you start your business and what do you do?

Madeleine: I started Make Like A Bandit in 2017, I was in my first marketing role since I graduated and was so miserable. I started having panic attacks in the office cupboard, I was depressed, anxious, constantly ill and having severe chest pain. After a few months, I decided I couldn’t carry on and I quit my job with nothing else lined up. I found a job advertised for a graphic designer at a local animal charity. To make my CV stand out I decide to draw a few animals and add them into my portfolio. I’d never drawn animals and I was extremely happy with the work I produced. I was sure I’d at least get an interview! I didn’t. But here I am two years later drawing animals,  AND making a living from it. Isn’t it funny how life works out like that.

I create a range of prints and cards, but my best selling products are my pet portraits. If you’d have told me two years ago the majority of my income would come from drawing dogs and cats, I would have laughed!

My journey with MLAB has been up and down, lack of confidence and not having a clue what/where to go has seriously slowed me down. BUT now, I’m in a really good place and I finally feel confident about what I’m creating.

Society1: What are you working on at the moment?

Madeleine: I have a scratch map of the world at home and every time I send a portrait or product to a customer in a new country, I scratch off the country! I’m extremely proud to say I’ve now delivered to 13 countries around the world and 11 states in America!

Society1: What’s the big Dream?

Madeleine: At the moment I donate 20% of my profits to a different animal charity every month. My dream is to start my own animal charity, but I have no idea what the aim would be yet. I’m working on it!

Society1: Why did you choose Society1?

MadeleineI need to be surrounded by creative people. I can’t sit at home and work by myself or otherwise I would never leave the house! I’ve been looking for that community feel, and I’ve found it! I couldn’t be happier working at Society1!
